BASEBALL: A Good Gamble

Aaron Gleeman is - surprise! - satisfied that the Twins are getting a good deal keeping Johan Santana. Is Santana really worth twice as much as Kris Benson? Wait, don't answer that.

I've complained about spiraling salaries (& prices), but I can see how retaining Santana is worth considerably more to Minnesota than Benson is to the Mets. The commitment to Santana sends a message to his teammates that they are breaking with the policy of dumping players as soon as they reach a certain career point (arbitration or free agency). As an Indians fan, I was expecting (okay hoping) the Twins would move him in the next year or so. As a baseball fan, I'm glad anytime a player stays with his current team.

Benson gives you two for the price of one, if you know what I mean.

Shouldn't the question be: Is Kris Benson really worth half as much as Johan Santana?
