POLITICS: Dean 1, Drudge 0

In the face of the DNC's denials of Matt Drudge's story on Howard Dean supporting Ray Nagin's opponent in the New Orleans mayoral race, Drudge says cryptically that "[t]he DRUDGE REPORT takes chairman Dean and his spokesman at their word." Which is a frustrating response, since if Drudge thought he had good sources and has since decided to retract the story, he should say so, and if he never had sources he had faith in, he shouldn't have run the item. But then, Drudge's record on retractions hasn't been terribly consistent, despite the obvious fact that he's had to do a number of them.

Sorry, Crank. Your frustration from a story you hoped to make hay out of not being true or your frustration in not being able to rely on a guy who is so often full of shit, hardly registers compared to the frustration of the subject of a false story that was no doubt picked up and spread throughout the internet. And there are plenty of folks who will continue to push it even after the retraction.

Sounds to me like Drudge is running in some pretty good company. When was the last time a retraction was easily extracted from one of the "major" media outlets? CBS comes to mind without having to think hard.
