BASEBALL: Royal Numbers

It's a good thing for Royals 3B Mark Teahen that he is having such a monster year since returning from the minors in early June, batting .333/.599/.411 and averaging 118 Runs, 112 RBI, 40 2B, 11 3B, 29 HR, 72 BB and 15 Sb per 162 games after struggling mightily since the beginning of 2005, because Royals 3B prospect Alex Gordon is having a tremendous year at AA Witchita in the Texas League, batting .318/.578/.422 and averaging 129 Runs, 108 RBI, 44 2B, 33 HR, 85 BB and 26 SB per 162 games. Which, even if you assume that Gordon still needs a bit of seasoning, puts the Royals in the unusual (for them) position of an embarrassment of riches at one position, and needing to decide which of them moves, and to where, or whether to trade one of them.

This is the Royals we're talking about, Crank. They'll probably move both of them for draft picks, then sign Mike Lowell after the Red Sox release him.

Considering the exceptionally poor defense at shortstop (hello, Angel Berroa!), Mark Teahen could take a shot at making a servicable shortstop. And even if he's even worse than imagined, he's been slugging .599 for the past 3 months, so it still might be worth it.

The move of Teahan to SS has actually been whispered. Actually, 3B is not where they ahve the biggest glut of talent in waiting. They have several OF'ers that look to have a shot in the bigs. At AA, in addition to Gordon, the have Butler, Maier and Lubanski who are all OF'ers. Butler was the MVP of the Futures game two years ago and is only 20. Currently he is playing for the US Olympic qualifying team. Of the other two Maier may be the next best prospect, but Lubanski has a lot of potential too. Additionally, they ahve three pitchers that should be in the rotation in '07-'08, Greinke, Hochaver and Lumden. Don't look now boys, but the Royals are on the horizon and they ahve a LOT of good young players that will be fun to watch.

I feel pretty safe is saying that no, the Royals are not on the horizon

We will see, but I wouldn't bet against them.
