POLITICS: The Fat Kid Train
From the Department of Bad Metaphors:
"We have stopped the locomotive train of childhood obesity in its tracks," Huckabee said. "Now it's time to turn the train around and move full speed ahead to healthier living."
Huckabee's crusade to prioritize using the government to battle obesity is, of course, one of the reasons why I regard him as essentially a nanny-state New Democrat more than a Republican (other than his pro-life convictions, that is).
Unbelieveably, he requires schools in the state to send out report cards to parents on their kid's weight. Having two sisters who were anorexic and a daughter who is showing certain tendencies in that direction, I am appalled by the idea.
Apparently, Huckabee began his obesity crusade after he had a positive personal experience with his own weight loss. One boggles to think what government programs he will institute should his wife get a satisfactory set of breast implants or if he has very good results from an, err, extension of his manhood. (original wording rejected by your content filter, lol)
And this is exactly why he doesn't have a prayer of making it to the White House. I am all for schools providing our kids with healthier choices at lunch time, but when they start weighing my son and sending reports on his weight is when I run for School Board.
I agree with you guys his nanny-statism, but I like him anyway. You have to like a governor who, while the Arkansas governor's mansion's being renovated, rolls up a singlewide out back and lives there for months.
Better to spend government money fighting obesity than to wage a pointless war halfway around the world at the cost of $2 billion per week. If we have to have Republicans, I'll take Huckabee.
