BASEBALL: Signs of Spring
A Ken Griffey injury status report. If the groundhog sees three of those, spring comes early.
Isn't one of the signs of former steroid use increased injury? I hope that isn't the case, but it makes you go huuuuummmmm!!!!
I'm no expert for sure, but my memory tells me that many of Griffey's injuries were play related. Things like broken bones are not steroid related; at least I don't think so.
I think Griffey is more typical, in that most athletes have a life span of maybe 10-12 high level years, then the wear and tear of extreme play (and pro athletes do things with their bodies that would kill us in a minute) starts to catch up. This is anecdotal of course, but Mantle and DiMaggio come to mind as well. Joe opted out once he couldn't do it at a Joe D level, Mantle needed the money. Griffey is hitting the same curve, but he started out early. I wonder if ARod, who also started young, will start the same level of decline. As I said, conjecture only. There will always be exceptions.
Like I said, I hope he is clean and always has been, but it makes one wonder when the injury bug starts to hit hard.
How exactly would steroids break your hands ?
