POLITICS: Why I Love Megan McArdle's Blog

Just go read the latest in her back-and-forth with Kevin Drum and Matt Yglesias on school choice. (Better yet, read the whole series).

Right Crank. It was an excellent post. I think she cut to the heart of it when she mentioned the only issue in so many school board minds was if they would or would not teach sex ed and evolution.

I still think that good schools are dependent upon:
1. Good parents
2. Good teachers
3. School size (a very distant third)

The money for facilities is needed too.

Parents too often think of school as the place where kids learn values, where they get dropped off so parents can both go to work,

Good teachers are fewer now, as the smart women who couldn't get jobs like heading corporations could only be teachers or nurses.

The smaller a school, the more unified the environment, the more peer pressure to do well--you don't get as easily lost in the shuffle.

As a libertarian (I used to think I was a moderate liberal, but I think I misnamed myself), I say let the parents choose. As long as certain minimum standards are met, what is the issue? And we'll find out soon enough if this time around we can produce kids who can actually read and write.

Strong piece by Megan. But that's redundant, isn't it?

I enjoy her blog.

I've also actually purchased a couple of small kitchen appliances based largely on her recommendation too. That's how I originally found her, through cooking related stuff.
