LAW: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

There's getting screwed by a lawyer, and then there's . . . this.

I came close to something like this. Maybe 25 years ago I started dating an old girlfriend. In between our two periods of dating, she got involved with someone who gave her herpes. I got lucky, and didn't get it. However, it only sort of came up in conversation after a few months, so I was not a happy camper.

That said, it has nothing to do with being a judge. If you wanted paragons of virtue to be judges, the list would be as long as..well nobody I guess.

First of all, I'm no expert on STDs, but I don't believe this dude wore a condom. Secondly, how the hell would he prove he got herpes from her? Third, how can anyone really corroborate his story?

This is no one's business, let alone a quasi-public judicial panel. Nothing here, move along. Get over it, big guy. That's the price for nailing a judge on the first date . . . or claiming that he did.

I think the readers on the WSJ blog are a lot tougher than the ones here so far. To me, the fact that the potential judge didn't reveal that she had herpes is a problem. Would it change your opinion if it were HIV? While I am not a lawyer, my guess is that a case can be made for assault charges, but you guys are the experts, you tell me.
