Just goes to show that pretty much every position is a hitter's position in this age in baseball. Even when Mark Belanger played, I believe that Earl Weaver may possibly have been the only manager in the game who would have played him everyday (I also believe that Weaver may even have played Mario Mendoza; Mendoza wasn't even as good a hitter as Belanger, but was probably as good a fielder. I'd love it if someone asked Weaver that). Today, I doubt that even Weaver would play him. Baseball has always gone in cycles, and I believe that there likely will again be a time when the defense-first middle infielder can get an everyday job, but it ain't now.
