BASEBALL: Meet The Fifth Starter
If it wasn't already obvious, you have to assume that today's game clinched the Mets' fifth starter job for El Duque.
UPDATE: Cerrone notes that the Braves have claimed Ruben Gotay off waivers, and the Rockies have reclaimed Steve Register. The Braves don't have an everyday job for Gotay either, but I share Cerrone's apprehension that the Braves must be able to get more out of his talent than the Mets.
Looks like it was his best effort of the spring. If ERA is 6.75 after 5 innings and 1 earned run, the rest of the time was either one horribly bad outing, or a series of mediocre ones. I know you'll be shocked to hear that each thrill packed inning of the Mets exhibition season has NOT BEEN broadcasted in Sacramento, so I have to trust Minaya's judgment, but these General Mgr. types rarely tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
He's old enough to be a Giant, but only after he's undeniably washed up would we want to give him a try. It will make Lincecum, Lowry and Cain look even younger.
Duque was an excellent pitcher (when healthy) last year, so if he's capable of pitching he's a pretty obvious choice.
The Duke has a new windup and movement, it is anyone's guess if he can get batters out. Based on the PSL games I watched I do not see him as a MLB pitcher, but he's always been a hard nut to crack. Seems like the 5 spot will be lucky to hit double digit wins.
When I saw the Gotay signing, my thought was "Man, I just know this is going to come back and bite us in the ass in September." But someone did point out that the Braves grabbed Chris Woodward after we dropped him, and that didn't seem to make a big difference.
Fingers crossed.
Oh yeah - LET'S GO METS!
