BLOG: Where Did That Come From?

I really miss referrers.net and its code that used to run on this site giving me an instant look, not just for the front page but every page on the blog, at how many visitors were entering a particular page from a particular site. Among other things it was a much more reliable guide than anything else I have both to who was linking to me and how many eyeballs they were sending my way.

Today, this post from nearly 8 years ago has drawn, estimating from SiteMeter, hundreds of people to this site. And I have no idea from where. I'd be willing to pay to get a service like that back, as I was paying before; but it just does not seem to exist, or if it does I can't find it.

It just makes me feel good that to write this entry you had to, in a positive frame of mind, write "refer." Good on 'ya, mate.

Crank, is it likely that you got hit by a spam bomb attempt? My blogs often get hit with tons of spam comments or attempted spam comments that some of my stats packages track as readers/visitors... fortunately my spam protection stops the comments, but the stats and the spam aren't integrated so they don't learn from each other.

I've noticed that auto-spammers tend to prefer older content, assuming that the older the content, the higher it's page rank, and therefore the more valuable a succesful spam link would ultimately be.

If you figure it out, I'd love to see an answer to what you discover. Good luck.
