POLITICS: Welcome To The Big Rock Candy Mountain

Do you think this woman might possibly be disappointed in Obama a year from now?

Wow!

The sad part is, I have no doubt she truly believes that. The even sadder part is, I have zero confidence that Mr. Obama will make any move to dissuade the (sizable) part of our populous that really does think that wealth comes from handouts and not hard work.

So, Crank (and Ace), was it something about her voice, her syntax and her language that prompted you to use this clip? You'll deny any such thing, of course, no doubt claiming outrage, but the circumstantial evidence is ovewhelming.

Magrooder... your insinuations are hysterical. It was pretty self-explanatory what prompted Ace and the Crank to use this clip. The fact she thinks she's going to be rich "this year". Why does she think she's going to be rich this year? From her own words, "because of Barack Obama".

No, Magrooder, it had nothing to do with her voice, inflection, or accent. It had to do with her ridiculous statements.

But hey, you keep obfuscating so you don't have to deal with the facts.

Ah, Magrooder. When all you have is a hammer, the whole world is a nail.

I'd seen a couple of anecdotal reports like this, but this was the first one I'd seen that had audio.

You are absolutely right Magrooder-her voice was laden with emotion, her syntax and logic were symptomatic of someone not very intelligent and her language was angry and incoherent-in other words she fit the profile of a....liberal.

A little too close to home, boys?

Magrooder,

1) Thank you for reinforcing the stereotype that liberals only see the world through race and labels. Well done.

2) Thank you for lacking the courage of your convictions and refusing to say straight out that you think Crank, Ace and those who have posted here are racist. Even though this is what you mean.

3) Thank you for refusing to address the issue on the merits in the slightest. This woman, irregardless of her race or creed, believes that her problems will be solved (that she'll be rich) because of President Obama. Because of the state. The longer that is her mindset, the longer her misfortune will persist.

I don't hope for change for myself, I go about and work for it. And that is all the difference in the world.

dch,
Probably NOT a liberal. It seems she voted for Obama.

Still hard to believe anyone thinks that 2009 will be the year they get rich. I haven't seen anything that delusional since I last read the Wall Street Journal editorial pages.

Rory,
One doesn't necessarily have to be a racist to play to racists. Or are you saying Ronald Reagan was a flat-out racist?

Also, are you saying the "Bush pioneers" didn't think having Bush be their President would lead to a financial windfall for them?

Finally, thanks for being a hard worker and expecting your self-reliance to bring about change. Now, what should we do for those born mentally retarded? Tell 'em to sink or swim?

Retaining more of your earned dollars = windfall.

There is the logic of a liberal.

>>One doesn't necessarily have to be a racist to play to racists. Or are you saying Ronald Reagan was a flat-out racist?

One does not have to be something to pander to that constituent (I'll leave the Reagan argument to the side for now) but to my way of reading Magrooder's comments this is not what he was insinuating. That we are forced to 'read between the lines' of this line of attack rather proves my point about the lack of conviction. Further, all we have is a sound file and only one person here leaped to the conclusion about that speaker's race. I still argue that a) the speaker's race is irrelevant and b) bringing it up says more about Magrooder then anything.

>>Also, are you saying the "Bush pioneers" didn't think having Bush be their President would lead to a financial windfall for them?

Or could it be that they thought that Bush's policies would provide an environment in which they could thrive? No one donates at that level to any candidate (pioneer's were fundraisers who gathered 100,000-199,000 for the Bush campaign) if they do not believe that their polices will be beneficial.

If you could point me to a quote where one of these 'pioneers' said Bush is going to make me rich I'd be much obliged. If you are honest with yourself however, the greatest likelihood here is that this woman expects the State to take care of her needs now that Mr. Obama is in office. I contend that this attitude is at the very least part of her difficulties, and may be at the heart of it.

>>Finally, thanks for being a hard worker and expecting your self-reliance to bring about change. Now, what should we do for those born mentally retarded? Tell 'em to sink or swim?

This is a straw-man, as there is nothing in that audio file that indicates this is an issue with this woman and does not address the central argument. That said, quite obviously a person born to such a circumstance would need the community's assistance in some manner.

Now can you, Magrooder, or anyone address why waiting for the state to provide for you is preferable for either the individual or the community/state/nation?

From the voice of the woman, it seems clear that she is under-educated, very frustrated with some aspect of her car transaction, and not especially bright. Yet, from this person, you are all so quick to reach broad conclusions about your political opponents. And, yes, I do think from her voice she sounds black and I firmly believe that you all derive great pleasure from using her voice because of that.

To paraphrase Harry Truman, "you all think I'm just giving you hell, when all I'm doing is telling the truth and you think it is hell."

No, I simply think you are (still) ducking the question.

Posted by: Rory at January 22, 2009 7:22 PM

It will be interesting to see if the Obamatons become disillusioned. I am not sure they will. They may make excuses for him and focus their rage on the usual liberal whipping boys. Eeevil Republicans, Big Business, Big Oil, The Rich, etc etc. It could well be that failure will belong to anyone but Obama.
