BASEBALL: Flamethrower

In case you missed it, Baseball America had a good interview a couple weeks back with monster pitching prospect Stephen Strasburg. He comes off about right, as a guy who has some brains and knows how good he is and what he needs to do. He seems pretty level-headed in the interview, but then, so did Doc Gooden; you can't know that much about these guys from a distance. Here's hoping he stays healthy enough to show us what he can do; the comparison to Mark Prior is a cautionary one.

Nats fans are salivating. All 7 or 8 of them think Zimmerman, Lannon, Strasburg at the top of the rotation might half-fill the park on sunny Sunday afternoons. Weeknights? Lets not get carried away. The federal government has a lot of work to do. Staffers, bureaucrats and lobbyists need their rest.

He says he's got a 95-97 sinking fastball now. Next up: he'll add Christy Mathewson's fadeaway pitch (only in the low 90s) and a knuckleball that spits in the batter's eyes as it goes by. . .:-P
