I can’t say I’m ecstatic about seeing Kris Benson in a Mets uniform for another three years, but re-signing him was clearly a necessity once the team let Al Leiter go. The real proof in the pudding on the acquisitions of Benson and Victor Zambrano will come next year (although the costs will take longer to weigh as we watch the development of Scott Kazmir and the other prospects in the deals). Benson should, if healthy, be at least about a league-average pitcher, which isn’t nothing.
Of course, yet again, all of this is just window dressing if Mets management still thinks that the club’s problems can be rectified by the elderly and expensive likes of Sammy Sosa.

The rule is, every time Benson’s contract discussions come up, we have to say we’d prefer to sign his wife.
Oh, and can we sign Sosa’s wife, too?
Not sure why Mets fans are so down on getting Sosa. Is he better than Floyd? Who else would you rather have for Floyd, cause it has to be another bad K: Chan Ho Park? Kevin Brown? Denny Neagle? Castilla & Guzman? (just kidding about the last ones). Sosa immediately becomes the best hitter in the lineup.
1. Sosa is in severe decline. David Wright will be a better hitter by 2006, maybe 2005. Floyd was better in 2004.
2. The Mets need to rebuild, not bring in more old guys.
3. I’d rather they keep Floyd (he’s five years younger and at least can play 1B) or eat part of his contract rather than take on another old expensive guy.
4. I’d actually take Brown rather than Sosa.
Fair enough, not a Mets fan, but I think you’re all speaking from the gut, not the head here. One by one:
1. Sosa is in severe decline. David Wright will be a better hitter by 2006, maybe 2005. Floyd was better in 2004.
– Perhaps, btu this was his first really subpar year & he was hurt. Decline from .330-60-160, if not immediate still gives you some good years.
2. The Mets need to rebuild, not bring in more old guys.
-But they have the old guys, Floyd’s no youngin. The question is what caliber old guy. You’re seeing Sosa & thinking Vaughn, but the situations are not comparable.
3. I’d rather they keep Floyd (he’s five years younger and at least can play 1B) or eat part of his contract rather than take on another old expensive guy.
– 5 years younger, but with his medical past, there’s no reason to think he’ll be any healthier than Sosa for the remainder of their deals (I assume that the union lets him waive the option, if not, I agree with you).
4. I’d actually take Brown rather than Sosa.
