Go read Captain Ed’s thorough summary of the new report on the FBI’s failings leading up to September 11. Of course, it’s easy to find law enforcement errors with the benefit of hindsight; investigation’s a tough job. But the blow-by-blow both emphasizes why the Patriot Act was needed and underlines the damage done by fear of racial profiling.

I think there’s something a little more fundamental here, Baseball Crank. The good folks working at the FBI are bureaucrats. It’s the nature of the beast and it will always be that way. Despite their best intentions and best efforts they’re going to behave like bureaucrats. And one of the things that means is that they’ll be resistant to change.
There needs to be a lot more citizen awareness and vigilance and taking of responsibility. We can’t rely on the authorities to keep us safe.
Does that mean I think we should be running around waving guns? No. But we should be getting involved a lot more. This is too important to leave to the experts.
