Looper Blows It

Not much to add to last night’s bitterly disappointing missed opportunity to sweep the Hated Yankees while they were playing defense like a beer league softball team that had gotten out of shape over the winter. Braden Looper just blew it, with a little help from David Wright not guarding the line with a man on first, nobody out and a 1-run lead in the bottom of the 9th. Looper’s not a terrible closer and he’s not a particularly expensive one, but he’s definitely not a positive in his role.

  1. Seems like when you have 2 guys who have been closers in Hernandez and Graves, you play in a decidedly mediocre division that likely no one will run away with and your currently closer looks like he REALLY does not want to be out there that it might be time to try something new. You have talked about the Mets trying to figure out whether to buy or sell and, realisitically, they have about 20 games to make that call. After posting an ERA of 36.00 over the weekend, blowing one game and making a run at blowing another it might be time for the Looper trial to cease at least until the Mets figure out what kind of team they are.
I cannot recall the last time I saw a closer look that nervous coming into games. I said as he was taking the mound that he wouldn’t even get an out. If you’re gonna blow it try now to do it against the Yankees anyway. Jeesh.

  2. Loopy Looper is gonna give me a blood pressure issue. He’s a circus out there. I was hoping they would deal for Urbina, but now Baez may be the only avail closer. Alternatively, they could run Graves out there in the 9th; he can’t do any worse.
Longer term, I see Heilman as a possible closer, or a situation like in 86 w/ Orosco/McDowell (L/R) duel closers with Ring/Heilman. Nobody does the duel closer anymore, but it worked pretty good that year. See also Nasty Boys in the early 90s Reds.

  3. Well at least they are more likely to be sellers than buyers now. But after flushing Kazmir down the toilet last year, nothing surprises me about the Wilpons anymore.
