So the Astros’ loss – inflicted by John Smoltz, in a characteristic 3-1 offensive brownout – ends the defending NL champs’ season, backs the Cards into the playoffs amidst what is, at present, a 5-0 blanking by the Brewers, ends Barry Bonds’ season (by mooting a potential makeup game tomorrow) and perhaps ends Roger Clemens’ career. A sad spectacle all around.

And as a testament to the peculiar logic of MLB, the team with the NL’s best record gets to play the hottest squad in baseball, while the Pads play the reeling Cardinals.
Why? Because they won a coin toss.

Oops. Ignore the first comment. I realized it wasn’t a coin toss, but failed to erase the comment.
What makes that peculiar logic? I would say it isn’t uncommon for the best team in the league to play the hottest team, since the hottest team is often the WC. I don’t see how the set-up would or should be any different.

Excepting the Mets, about as apt a description of this year’s National League as we’re likely to read. Also describes the state of pitching in MLB as a whole the past few years, which is porbably a contributory factor to the gross mediocrity of the N.L. this year.
