It turns out that story is entirely fictional – he cut his hand on broken glass in a bar while he was out drinking.

In baseball, I generally assume that virtually any “freak accident” is just an excuse for something that happened while drinking.
Drinking, or something else. Wade Boggs hurting his ribs while removing a pair of cowboy boots and Kevin Elster hurting his back while lying on a couch come to mind.
