Jobless Joe?

I don’t see a specific story on the website but the talk of the TV is that the Daily News is reporting that Hated (or Pitied?) Yankees will fire Joe Torre, perhaps as early as today, and bring back Lou Piniella. Mike Lupica wants it to happen. This strikes me as insane – I’m no lover of Torre but how exactly is it his fault? This is a veteran team, and they just picked a bad time to lose 3 in a row to a good pitching staff. And I’m not sure what Piniella adds to the picture.

  1. How was it anyone’s fault that Ron Davis and George Frazier decided to suck in the fall of ’81?
    It’s George, Crank. Don’t look for reason, don’t look for logic. Look for emotion and reaction and craziness.
    And enjoy the hell out of it. It’s 1982 in the Bronx. Which means Oscar Gamble should be arriving soon, to be followed by Steve Kemp and Eddie Lee Whitson.
    If Billy kept his car on the road that night, he’d be coming back too.

  2. It is now commonplace for the Yankees to fold in the post-season. As a Yankees fan, I was not suprised at their performance. I take a Zen-like attitude: if they win, great; if they lose, that’s baseball.
    The Yanks played the Tigers as if they were betting on the Tigers to win. There is a tendency on this team for all the bats to dry up at the same time. The pitching staff has serious problems and the bullpen is exhausted because no one can pitch out of the sixth inning.
    The Yankees did not have to win 4 world series from 1996-2000. The ’96 win easily could have been a loss without the Leyritz home run, and they almost did not make the playoffs in 2000.
    Trading A-Rod is a big mistake. But Yankees fans are babies and louts and contrary to popular belief, are not the best informed sports fans. They boo potential hall of famers and want perfection each and every time. Not realisitc for baseball. You can have a successful season without winning the world series.
    The Mets, on the other hand, are playing like champions. Unlike many Yankees fans, I pull for the Mets. They are probably the odds-on favorite to win the pennant and the world series. And I absolutely hope they do.

    I heard Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio talking about how MLB Manager in the most overrated job in sports. I’m inclined to agree. What power, exactly does Joe Torre have over the way the Yankees play? I mean, he can try to motivate them (grown men who presumably understand what’s at stake) to play better, but ultimately baseball is up to the players, isn’t it? And these Yankee pitchers were not that great, nor were the bats particularly good. Oh, I know everyone talked about the Greatest Lineup Ever™, but weren’t folks getting ahead of themselves? I mean, Matsui’d been out most of the year with injury, Sheffield too (not to mention he’s, well, old), Giambi hadn’t had a homerun in over a month, A-Rod is, well, not the greatest under pressure, etc. There was a superficial gloss on this team.
    Good points about the 1996 and 2000 Yankees.

  4. I’d fire him in a heartbeat. Is it his fault? No. But he adds nothing. Sweet Lou, or Joe G, or Dopey Baker could do the same damn thing, if not better. Yanks have the worst clubhouse in the game, Giambi is calling people out? Thanks, but leadership called, no junkies need apply. Jared Wright in series ending game? That’s a joke unto itself. Torre is adding nothing, I’d love to see the Yanks keep him. They never win w/ him again. Big Stein should kill everything that moves, including that back stabbing SS.

  5. If Steinbrenner wants to replace Torre, I can’t entirely argue, since the team has underachieved in the playoffs for several years now. But if so, he should hire somebody new, not a guy nearly as old as Joe, who George has already fired twice.
