RELIGION: Preaching at Volume

So the Ninth Circuit rejects claims that San Francsico discriminated in applying its noise ordinance against roving Christian evangelists, rejecting a rare marriage of evangelical Christians and the ACLU. Maybe it’s just me, but my reaction to this case is that I can think of higer-leverage uses for dedicated Christian evangelists than preaching by loudspeaker on the streets of San Francisco.

  1. We once lived in a city in NJ and were plagued by an evangelist with a bull horn who started his rant at 6:00 AM on Sunday mornings. One of many reasons why we left. I’ll bet the decision would have been different if the evangelist did not have the ACLU on his side.

  2. I wish people would remember that free speech does not mean you can bother everybody whenever you want. Say you evangelize on a public speech in front of a church/synagogue/whatever that is different. You may have the “right” to speech, but the rules of common sense says shuthehellup.
