A Fred Reality Check

I like Fred. Strategically, I’d like to see Fred win South Carolina on Saturday. Concerned as I am about his performance on the trail thus far, I would have no quarrel with Fred as the nominee.
But let’s face facts. Having failed to make a dent with a late run in Iowa, Fred needs to win South Carolina, or at least finish a very close second there, to have any reason for staying in the race (I know some people hope that Fred could ride in on a white horse in case of a brokered deal – but frankly he would have a better chance of doing that if he stops losing primaries and stops criticizing other candidates, neither of which can be done as long as he is still running).
And it’s three days until the voting. And the RCP polling average still has Fred in fourth place in SC, with only a hair over 10% of the vote. Even factoring in that the more recent polls give him some momentum, Fred is really going to have to do something surprising to top 20% of the vote. And I can’t see any possible justification for him staying in the race if he can’t pull 20% of the vote in a Southern state with one of the nation’s most conservative electorates when he has thrown himself into the fight there.
Fight on to Saturday, Fred. But if Saturday comes and goes without a major shocker, Fredheads are going to have to accept that the Big Five will have dropped to the Big Four by dawn on Sunday.

  1. A vote against Huckabee and McCain anywhere is a vote for conservatism and Americans everywhere. I like Fred as well, but we have to be realistic. What candidate consistently gets the most conservatives in every state? Vote Mitt!

  2. What was the point of this article? I believe we all are acutely aware of the situation.
PLEASE write an article about Fred being a Federalist and what that means in real-world terms. Please write how he’s been a conservative all his life and that he might be part of a dying breed.

  3. I agree, why talk process?
Is he a better conservative than the other 4, you bet. Fiscal, Social, and Defence. He’s the full package.
But you talk process, even though Fred himself disdains it.

  4. I find that it is good policy to do what Oink says and not to argue.
Seriously, I appreciate that you are as frustrated as the rest of us at the way things have been going but speculating about this sort of thing helps no one but the other candidates and waaaay too many Rino’s stand to benefit from that(all of em in my mind if you don’t count Hunter) Of course I’m operating from the assumption that you are more than just “sort of” a Fred supporter.

  5. Fred Thompson is the only candidate that doesn’t come with baggage, ethics questions, flip-flops or down right lies.
Why vote for hamburger when you can vote for STEAK!
go to http://www.fred08.com to find out more about the STEAK in this fight.

  6. This entire thread is a nonstarter. Fred isn’t winning anything, period. I must admit its somewhat amusing watching desperate folks staking their hopes in Fred, who to the general electorate is about as exciting as watching paint dry. He’s already done duh, SC or not.

  7. As much as I hate to admit it, the Crank is right about SC being an absolute must win or very strong second for Fred. He has bet the ranch, so to speak, on this state, and a third place finish just won’t get it done for him. I believe that his chances are better than the polling indicates, so I hope that he can pull it out.

  8. I would think Thompson is realistic about the fact that he needs to finish ahead of Romney and Huckabee, or get out. A close second to McCain would still leave him viable. Not that I think that’s likely.

  9. Fred is the only person who should decide if he needs to get out. He has said he “needs to do well” in SC; let’s leave it up to Fred to decide how well. Meanwhile, we should do all we can to help him win. If we can’t do anything else, we can pray!

  10. If everyone who said they thought Fred was actually the best on issues, but he can’t win, so everyone should support *fill in the blank* would just say Fred is the best, so I’m voting for him no matter what, the vast majority of people, at least those posting on the web, would be voting for him and there would be no question that he would win. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever witnessed. Vote for the candidate you think is the best. Period. As for me, I’m voting for Fred!

  11. I’m fed up with liberals, half-liberals or wannabe liberals. The only viable candidate that is a TRUE CONSERVATIVE based on CONSTITUTIONAL PRINCIPLES is Fred Thompson!
Our nation is in the mess that its in due to abandonment of these principles, and no Republican that flip-flops, panders or wants to be a “new wave” conservative will get my vote – I want the GENUINE ARTICLE and he’s bulldog tough to boot!

    Go Fred!

  12. As useless an article as Ive read recently.
I like Fred but he waiting too long…
I like Fred but ya know, he’s lazy…
    Blah blah blah…
I come to the net for insightful and knowlegable info. I can find this crap on any channel on TV…

  13. It really is a shame that so many republicans are shopping for a movie star instead of a true conservative. Bush is no true conservative, but Fred is, and in the style of Regan he would work to keep America safe, keep taxes low, and keep the liberal euro-weenie democrats in check.
Place a smart vote for America’s future. Vote for Fred. I did.

  14. The point of the post is that he is a Rudy supporter and he’s hoping that Fred can do enough damage to the other guys before having to drop out himself.
    That’s the real point. 🙂

  15. When we get to the conservative states where Dems and Ind’s can’t vote, McCain and Huck will be done in. I expect Fred to do well. Listen to what all the “experts” have been telling us so far and you can only conclude that collectivly full of s#|7.
    Fred!

  16. OK, slight change in article here. I find it interesting how many people told you Crank what to write, or how to write it. Sometimes you won’t bring up an issue since it’s so damning to your “cause” (like the erased CIA memos–wonder if there is an 18 minute gap). I appreciate the forum, so I try my best to sometimes bite my tongue and not hijack things. Lesson to you all:
If you don’t like the subject matter, start your own blog.

  17. Fred and Huck are done after today. This was Huck’s chance to win big, and Fred, well, he can now go back on display in whatever museum he was in up until last summer. Newt Gingrich should have run, I’m not happy with any of the choices frankly.
