Again, I did not and do not see anything in the monkey cartoon that the Sharpton’s of the world purport to see. I am sure that there are numerous cartoons in addition to those posted by Caleb as to which someone could cry foul.
But, isn’t the purpose of editorial cartooning to lampoon those in power? A cartoonist certainly can draw cartoons that are openly and deliberately hurtful from being racist, sexist, anti-religious, etc. By the same token, however, those offended by it can protest, boycott products or publishers, etc. And a publishing organ can fire a cartoonist who, it believes has gone too far.
If cartoonists are self-censoring to an extent that points of “fair game” are not being published, they have only themselves to blame.
I believe Al and Jesse could find racism in a chocolate chip cookie…but that is their calling in life…making something out of nothing.

Stripping away the GOP myths, it would seem that “identity politics” is an issue for both major parties.

My comment was that Jesse, Al, etc. only seem to voice their objections when it suits their political bias not when any person of their race are depicted unfavorably. They only support people of their race who also have the same political views as they do.
As for the chimp cartoon, I did not find it racist rather I did not get it. It seemed stupid to me.
Political cartoonist are just journalists who voice their opinions via drawings rather than writing. They can be (and are) just as biased as any other journalist (see dunesbury as an example). Are they (will they) be intimiated to not create cartoons like they created of Bush, Rice, Cheney just because Obama is black? We shall see won’t we?

The crux of your argument seems that, among political cartoonists, conservatives are unfairly pilloried and that Sharpton, et al. don’t complain. Assuming for a minute that this is true, you seem to be advocating assertions of “offense” on behalf of these conservatives. That response seems like more race-baiting.
As for your claims of “bias,” that is true only in the classical sense of the word. Gary Trudeau has a perspective and a point of view from which he regularly skewers conservatives. Ann Coulter has a perspective and a point of view from which she regularly skewers liberals. Presumably, you have no problem with Coulter because you generally agree with her. If you want to be consistent, then, you can rebut Trudeau, but not cry unfair or biased.
Finally, cartoonists are not journalists, but are more akin to editorialists and opinion-writers; they don’t have to present both sides.

I agree that cartoonist present their views-fair enough they are not journalists. It would be nice if the MSM would actually show both liberal and conservative cartoons in the papers.
I do have issues with Ann Coulter at times. I think she goes too far sometimes. She also categorizes people too much. I will say that she is no further out to the right than a large number of MSM people who are far to the left (Bill Maher, Joy Behar, Rosie OD, Bill Moyer, etc). IMHO, many more far left get MSM air time than either moderate or far right people.
