One’s A Convicted Pardoned Liar

In case you missed it, from late last week: did you know that the YES Network (presumably at the urging of George Steinbrenner, who was once convicted of making illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon), was a major donor to the group (also including such distinguished John Kerry supporters as Bob Torricelli) that ran particularly pointed anti-Howard Dean ads in Iowa (the ads that showed Osama bin Laden and questioned whether Dean had the experience to deal with him)?
One wonders whether YES’ anti-Dean position had anything to do with his threat to regulate the media.

  1. Does that mean you are lending credence to the conspiracy theories running around about the media-orchestrated Dean takedown after his remarks on the media in Dec?
Naturally, since we disagree on nearly all political issues, it should come as no shock to you that I was a Dean supporter, donor, and voted for him in the Michigan caucus.
While I am sure the media decided to do him no favors after that, even I don’t subscribe to such grand conspiracy theories. I have been very analytical and critical of Dean’s campaign, and while abhorrent, the Osama ads and everything else thrown at him should have come as no surprise and was not handled appropriately.
The blame for Dean’s demise as frontrunner and then viable candidate lies more at his own feet (and his campaign) than those of Steinbrenner, Kerry, Torricelli, Gephart, “the media” or anyone else.

  2. The bin Laden ad wasn’t beanbag, but as I noted in one of the posts I linked to, I thought at the time that it was fair game. The only thing that smacked of dirty pool is that we didn’t get to find out for certain until after Iowa who was behind the ads.
I agree that it was mostly Dean’s fault (and secondarily that Dean wasn’t really as strong as he looked). I don’t think the media had it in for Dean, but they certainly zeroed in on him – as they usually do to a frontrunner – and he didn’t handle it well at all.
