I�m not sure Spitzer isn�t chasing them himself here. There is a huge group of people in the middle on the gay marriage issue who aren�t strongly opposed to gay unions, but who don�t want to see the law openly flouted. Spitzer is wisely playing to them as well as actually doing his job.
It�s as smart politically as it is necessary legally.
