It seems a little weaselly of MLB to rush forward in pursuit of a publicly-financed DC stadium to apparently circumvent the fact that the city just, I believe, elected new D.C. Council members opposed to the idea of public financing. And the Anacostia waterfront seems like a risky choice for a site. It could be great for economic development�or just end up being a stadium in the midst of a slum.
Obviously, I also agree with the discouraging Met post.
As long as they take care of it before the end of the year, the financing can pass through the lame duck City Council without even worrying about Marion Barry et al. That said, it’s highly questionable that the three new councilmen actually would vote against funding. The real pressing issue here is getting RFK refurbished in time for April.
I love the idea that someone else is paying for this. (I live in Maryland.) I’m delighted to have a chance to see MLB in Washington, including that awful team in NY that I’ve been trying, with mixed success, to tune out over the past couple of years. But let’s face it. You can’t compare the economic effects of this proposed stadium to the economic effects of the MCI Center. MCI is open all year long, with events on most days. A baseball stadium is not a multi-use facility. During the off-season and during road trips, the neighborhood will be residents-only. Visit Yankee Stadium in November if you doubt this.
