The NCAA banned these exhibition games because colleges were playing AAU teams in return for funneling stars into their program. Rudy Gay is a prime example, where the Baltimore Ballers were created to play one game against UConn for a $50,000 payday. Gay goes to UConn.
AiA and the other “mercenary” squads are sad bystanders of this bending of the rules.
