Everything You Wanted To Know About The Virginia Governor’s Race

I’m late linking to this one, but John Behan at Commonwealth Conservative has an exhaustive look at the 2005 Virginia governor’s race. My only quibble is with his suggestion that this year’s race in New Jersey will be uninteresting; to the contrary, a showdown that could potentially come down to Jon Corzine against Bret Schundler could be a fascinating race, and should be something of a referendum on the New Jersey Democrats’ manipulation of the election laws (Frank Lautenberg, ahem, and the timing of Jim McGreevey’s exit) and general corruption (the cause of Jim McGreevey’s exit).

  1. As a fan of Jersey politics, I’d like to share your optimism for a fun year, but I really can’t. The NJ Republican party is a mess, they’re not enthusiastic about any of their candidates, Schundler still isn’t liked by the party establishment AND might have ticked off the strong conservatives by not supporting any primary challenges in the 2003 state legislative elections.
Plus, Schundler seemed totally unable to control the campaign direction in the 2001 general election, and I don’t know that he’d do any better against Corzine’s millions. As for your issues, if Lautenberg didn’t hurt them in 2002, why would it now? McGreevey’s weird timing is mostly going to be pinned on McGreevey. As for the general corruption, that could make it interesting, but it may be hard to make that stick to Corzine. It’s always hard to tell how much attention the average voter really pays to state politics. My instinct says that it will be a boring race, by New Jersey standards, and that Corzine will win easily. (If the Republicans come up with a stronger candidater than Schundler or Doug Forrester, I may change that.)

  2. New Jersey

Baseball Crank suggests that this year’s New Jersey govenror’s race will be exciting because it will be a referendum on the New Jersey Democratic Party’s corruption. I’m not so sure, not because I think the NJ Dems are clean, but…
