Houston Grounded

Last night’s deadline came and went and the Astros didn’t sign Carlos Beltran, leaving the Mets in the driver’s seat. It’s time to close the deal. I’m excited by this – the Mets’ moves under Omar Minaya haven’t been brilliant – to the contrary, they’re expensive and fraught with risk – but at least adding Pedro Martinez and pursuing Beltran are the right kind of risks, chasing after top-of-the-market talents, in Beltran’s case a guy who’s still young, healthy, durable, in good shape and a good defensive player: the anti-Mo in every way.

  1. Scott Boras might have done something no one had ever thought possible: Give Bud Adams a run for his money as the most hated person in Houston.
As much as losing Beltran pains me as an Astros fan, maybe McLane will now use some of that money to tie up Oswalt and Berkman. I hope.

  2. Beltran

If I were Omar Minaya at this point, and I were bidding for Beltran, I’d lower my bid because one bidder just fell out. Boras’ usual strategy is to find a sucker who will bid against himself for a player….

  3. If there is a sucker in the room, bet on Scott Boras to find him. There is no doubt that Carlos Beltran is an outstanding player. However, Scott Boras has yet again made the sucker bid against himself and get his client about $20 million more than anybody else was willing to pay. After the Astros dropped out; is there anyone else willing to pay $100 million/6 years. I doubt the Astros even reached the Boras imposed entry fee of $100 million. Projections on Beltran over the next six years come in at about 28-30 HR, 95 runs and RBI. What happens when David Wright starts putting numbers like that up? I suppose since he isn’t a Latino, Omar will let him walk.
It is becoming more and more difficult to be a Met fan.

  4. Mak, the Yankees would’ve given him $100 million over 6 years in a heartbeat.
I laugh at Vazquez, prospects and $8 million for the Big Unit plus a $32 million extension. If the Yankees had gotten Beltran for 6 years at $100 million I would’ve been pissed.
