  1. Murphy was a good player, but not a HOF’er. I remember a ball I saw him hit in Busch Stadium in St. Louis. He hit a line drive HR that that hit one of the concrete columns behind the fence and the ball rebounded all the way to the infield. Murphy was a good hitter and a good CF, but he was not great at either.

  2. Murphy is one of those players that force you to say you have to look beyond the stats. Well, in baseball, have you noticed, the players, the very good ones who earn those comments, actually do have good stats? The improtant ones, the runs scored, the OPS, the secondary numbers. Murphy’s numbers, and I won’t take the time to look them up, were good, enhanced by the Launching Pad, and did not last all that long.
He was a very good player, but I am among those who feel Cooperstown is for the great, not the very good.
