Sunk Costs

I’ve been hard enough on Omar Minaya, but I should add this further thought on the Benson-for-Julio trade: one thing I do like about him is that Minaya doesn’t marry his mistakes. Minaya wasn’t the guy who traded for Benson, but he is the one who gave him the big free agent contract, when there were many better alternatives on the market, and he could easily have dug in and insisted on Benson being a part of the rotation going forward. That he didn’t is a credit to Minaya’s willingness to put success over pride, a failing of too many GMs.

    She may be more headaches than she’s worth but I’d be willing to test that out.
    WTF is Baltimore thinking? I’m sure getting rid of Julio was their objective but didn’t they also lose their closer?

Too bad management in Philadelphia has never understood the concept of sunk costs…otherwise we wouldn’t have had to watch Gregg Jeffries, Len Dykstra, Ken Ryan, Jeff Brantley, and more recently people like Lance Cormier kept on the roster and (sometimes) playing simply because of their big contracts. You make decisions based on what you can control, not what you can’t.

  6. ICallMasICM – Mrs. Benson’s charms are obvious, but believe me, it would not take long with a woman like that to realize that she’s not worth it. She’s bonkers. And when she’s older she won’t look the same . . . but she’ll still be bonkers.

  7. I have a certain degree of respect for Benson’s willingness to neither apologize for his wife nor act like he’s embaressed by her. However, I think he did fail to insist on a few basic boundaries, notably that a player’s wife should never, ever publicly involve herself in baseball decisions. Most of Anna’s extracurricular activities are really just her business and his, but that is not.

  8. I agree that Benson, like Antonio Davis, should be expected to side with his wife. That’s yet another reason not to marry a crazy person in the first place.
