Well, the Mets trailed the Hated Yankees 4-3 after the first inning. The question is who should be more depressed: Mets fans watching Jeremi Gonzalez get trotted out and predictably get shelled, or the Yankees watching their #1 starter, Randy Johnson, yet again get lit up, on a day when the Yankes get news that Carl Pavano needs elbow surgery and is likely done attempting to pitch this season.
UPDATE: 5-5 in the third after Xavier Nady takes Johnson deep. Nady was nine years old when Johnson broke in. I’ve been a big believer in the Big Unit remaining effective with the Yanks, but I’m starting to think he’s had it.

As much as I hate rooting for the Yankees, my Braves need all the help they can get this year!
Johnson should have enough left to adjust and become effective again, but I suspect it’s hard to make those adjustments this late in a career. Guys like Seaver or Tom Glavine who hit a crisis in their mid/late thirties have more motivation to adjust, but Randy might be like Steve Carlton, who lost it completely once the power game that he kept into his 40s deserted him.
Why can’t we put Heilman back in the rotation already? There will be peace in the Middle East before the Mets have a decent GM.

I thought at the time they extended RJ that that deal had the possibility of being the worst pitcher signing since the Rockies signed Mike Hampton. As of last year’s ALDS he looked sharp in spots, but he’s been pretty woeful this year. I wonder how much patience Steinbrenner will have with Kevin Brown II if it goes that way.
The Yankees have more money in Wright, Pavano and Johnson than most teams have in their whole starting line-ups. Wright is a bust and will likely never be effective in pinstripes. Pavano is done for the year and likely will never pitch again for the Yankees and Johnson still pitches like he’s got the stuff he had a few years ago except he doesn’t. The Yanks maybe will only generate 40 or so wins out of that $100 million+ investment. Ouchy.
