Cursed Once Again!

Let’s see – David Ortiz out indefinitely with heart trouble, Coco Crisp sidelined with a bum shoulder, Jon Lester may have cancer . . . At this point, it would not surprise me to see a plague of locusts and a river of blood at Fenway. Dr. Manhattan asked recently if a franchise has ever had a worse month, all things considered – the Mets in August 1991 come to mind, the 1899 Spiders the month their stadium burned down, and the White Sox in September 1920 probably take the cake, but this is up there.
But hey, at least Jeff Reardon got off.

  1. When did the 1899 Spiders stadium burn down? I think the Cleveland Indians used League Park when they joined the AL. What happened to the Spiders is their home attendance was so terrible (and with the owners intentionally sabotaging the team, who can blame the fans) that the owners scheduled home games on the road in hope of better gate receipts. They weren’t the first team to do that, but they did it most spectacularly.

  2. Saw them in Seattle on Sunday and Crisp was the only full-time real life outfielder in the line-up. With Javy Lopez, Dustin Pedroia and Kurt Snyder in the game they only fielded 6 actual major league players. Maybe they can go with an all-infielder line-up now.

  3. Somehow old schoolers (or just oldheads) like Hal Bodley will find a way to blame it all on Bill James.
