I linked last fall to a Baseball Prospectus analysis of the biggest pennant races collapses of all time, ranked by the team’s statistical odds of making the postseason. As of September 19, 2006, the Cardinals were estimated by Coolstandings.com to have a 99.9% chance of making the postseason, which if they blow it would tie them with the 1995 Angels for the biggest choke ever.

If the Cards blow this it would be the biggest collapse. Give me a break, what are the chances of the Cards losing 7 in a row and the Astros winning 7 in a row?
Well. The Cards aren’t really that good a team though Mike. Their pitching has been weak and they’ve been decimated by injuries this year. So when we compare this collapse to others I think we should factor that in – its different when a real powerhouse like the ’64 Phillies do something like this.
Right? I’m not arguing mind you, just thinking out loud.
You guys have been having fun watching a darn good Mets team all year. For the last 10 days or so I’ve finally been having that same kind of fun, the kind where you start getting ready for the game 1/2 hour early, where you’re cheering the TV, etcetera. I forgot how much I missed that. Even if the Astros don’t make it – and its still severely in doubt – I at least had some fun this year.
Our baseball team has heart – I’m proud of them for that, for not mailing it in the last couple weeks.
