  1. I am relieved. After last night’s Lima impression it was clear he could not compete. Whether he got shelled with the Mets up 2 games in the first round, or if Willie saved him for a Willis Reed moment, it would have ended badly. We have closure, we have our roster. As some rich dude once said “Let’s play some meaningful games…”

  2. Look, at least things can be planned now. They won a ton with him on the DL. Maybe now they can focus and win the two NL series. They could take the Twins and the Tigers, probably not the A’s, and I don’t want to think about the Yankee lineup. Still, the Met lineup when cranking is pretty scary too. And they have the best bullpen around.

  3. Obviously, it sucks not to have Pedro as Pedro. But it sure beats having Pedro wash out in a key moment, as David Wells and Kevin Brown did for the Yankees in recent years. The Mets are built to be fine with starters who give them 5 2/3 and give up three runs – they just need to not have starters give up six runs in the first inning. I think John Maine should do okay.

  4. That’s the Maine MO–6 innings, 2 homeruns, 3 runs. No problem with that, when our bullpen holds ’em to 2 hits, 0 runs over 3 innings.

  5. Astros won again, Cards lost again. Its down to a half game lead for the Cards.
    Cards have 4 games left, 3 with the Brewers and 1 make up against the Giants. The Astros have 3 at Atlanta starting tonight. Tied in wins, the Astros down one game in the loss column.
    Point being, you might want to think about how the Mets line up against the Astros in a series where they face Oswalt, Clemens and Pettitte.
    The good news for the Mets is you don’t need Pedro to knock down the Astros lineup. What you DO need is excellent defense against the small ball game. When it comes to Berkman and Use-The-Force-Luke Scott, you need a center fielder that can run like a raped ape. You guys got that one covered.
    I hope it happens, just so I can smack talk with you guys a bit. It’ll be fun as hell.

  6. I first, second, and third-guessed the failure to pull the trigger on a Barry Zito deal. Minaya’s unwillingness to trade Milledge for Zito may now end up being fatal to the season. This was stupid on several different levels, and now, well…ugh, let’s just hope Glavine, Hernandez, Maine and (oh God) Trax catch fire.

  7. Phil, I’d say just the opposite. Without Pedro, this staff is far from certain to be championship caliber even if it had Zito. And giving up what it would have taken to get him, but not winning, would have been a disaster. (I would have pulled the trigger on a deal for Oswalt, but so would Omar).

  8. I’ve been completely pessimistic about the Mets’ chances for a long while now, so, in contrast to Crank, this doesn’t really phase me at all. I’m incredulous that Crank (or anyone else) would have had any expectations about Pedro in the playoffs at all. He’s been hurt for a long time, and we had never been given one reason to believe that he’d be back in prime form for the playoffs. I’d kept seeing Crank and other say, in effect, “as long as Pedro is Pedro in the playoffs we’ll be OK”. Well, why would you have thought that he’d be Pedro in the playoffs? I guess I’ve discounted his return as a #1 for quite a while now (figuring if he did get back into form by October, that would be a happy surprise). So this is the team I’ve been expecting to see. And, unfortunately, I don’t think it’s that pretty. Given that it looks like Houston will get by StL at this point, let’s hope that Philly doesn’t take the Wild Card, so at least we can avoid Clemens and Oswalt in the first round.

  9. I don’t see many pitchers duels in the Mets near future. You better be able to club teams into submission or you will never make it to the series, much less win.

  10. You guys better stop thinking about the World Series and start thinking about your first opponent.
    One game at a time you know. My sports page here in Houston is loaded with talk about what it takes to win tonight, not what it takes to win the WS.
    Oh. Atlanta tonight at 7 eastern, same Saturday, 1pm Sunday. Clemens (heehee, woohoo, fun even if we lose) tonight, TBA tomorrow (I’m guessing Bucholz or Wandy since Hirsch just pitched) and “give me the ball when everything is on the line and I’ll at least make you proud” Andy Pettite Sunday at noon.

  11. Dwil, Your sportspage is focused on tonight because you are still playing games that count, the Mets aren’t. They will be shortly, and nobody is looking past any oppponent.

  12. Well… ESPN.com poll: how far will the Mets go without Pedro? Right now, at 115,000 votes, we’re at 35% lose NLDS, 33% lose NLCS, 22% lose WS, 10% win WS. So somebody’s thinking about future opponents.

  13. Al, I’m not sure what that means. Sportsfans, not mets fans, answered a poll question and that means what, exactly? And fans expectations will affect on field results how?
    Re Dwil’s boys: I’m torn, would hate to see Oswalt, Petite, and the Bat throwing dirtbag alive in Oct. On the other hand, I despise LaRussa. Seeing his name attached to a historic collapse would be priceless.

    Heh. I hadn’t thought about that incident in a long time. I was stunned at the time that he didn’t get thrown out of the game. I’m still not sure I understand how he got away with doing that and didn’t get tossed.
    That said, that incident is representative of what Clemens brings to a team, something the Astros sorely lack when he’s not around: balls. Every Astro gains about a pound below the belt when Clemens takes the mound.
    In any case, we lost last night and the Cards won. It is very nearly over, and if you guys end up facing the Cards I expect to enjoy watching you beat the living crap out of that team.
