In 1977, Mike Torrez was a big part of the Yankees stretch drive against the Red Sox, and pitched brilliantly in the World Series. Sox fans, having suffered through watching Torrez lead the Hated Yankees to vitcory, were ecstatic when the Red Sox got Torrez – only to see him hurt them even worse in 1978, going 1-4 with a 5.96 ERA against the Yanks, including the notorious Bucky Dent home run that decided the season in its 163rd game.
In 2000, Joe Torre – the man who led the Mets to three straight seasons of 95 or more losses – managed the Yanks to their fourth World Championship in five years, defeating the Mets in the Subway Series.
Today, the Yankees finally found themselves on the other end of such a turnaround, as Kenny Rogers, notorious for his playoff flops in New York, stuck a dagger in the Bronx Bombers and their vaunted lineup.
Somewhere in the darkness of Comerica Park, he broke even.

Anyhow, let me be the first to say that I can’t believe how damn good Rogers was last night. I felt like I was watching Carlton out there. My goodness, where’d that come from?
Rogers was great, but did anyone else think he was on the verge of collapse in the first 4 innings? He pouted like a brat over every call he did not get. Seemed to me like the yanks were one hit from pushing that jackass out of the game. I like the fate tempting. If our boys see Kenny he is out in the third. It’s “bring it on” time in Flushing. That said, we do need a decent outing from Trax. If we lose today I’m not down with OPp in the next game. Top of the world to sudden death, back at big shea, I love this time of year.
A-Rod strikes again! Last 12 post-season games. He is 5-44 (.114 and his slugging percentage is the same) with 2 RBIs. Yankees are 3-9. He is so awesome! I almost want to root for the Yankees just to watch his sorry ass flail around out there some more.
A-Fraud hitting 8th and the Yanks are down 3-0 in the 2nd. The only bad thing about them taking the gaspipe this early is that it may be a worse post-season debacle than the 2004 loss to the Sox. This is the only team in the history of baseball to start all nine players who are either current or former All-Stars and they are going down in flames to a team that staggered down the stretch. Let’s hope A-Rod boots a couple to go with his 0-fer to make it that much sweeter.

Whats the over under on Yankee baserunners?
I had never seeen Rogers’ fastball clock faster than 89 mph, but after the first inning he was consistently in the low 90s, and hit as high as 92. And he’s 42?
But he will rightfully be remembered as a guy who couldn’t cut it as a New York player. Indeed, in the last week of the season, one sports show reported on Rogers pitching with the bases loaded and “as usual” walking in a run.
It will be veddy interesting to see what happens if he ends up pitching a World Series game at Shea.
