So let me get this straight: we know that Princess Diana’s driver was drunk, speeding and trying to flee paparazzi, and she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt…and yet some people still find her death mysterious?

We saw the planes fly into the towers but you still have idiots like James Brolin who refuse to believe that it really happened that way.
I think the controversy is why her car was travelling at high speed. It’s sexy to say she was murdered, not a clear fact that a plowed driver can’t control a 5000 pound car in a tunnel. I assume he swerved because he saw a grassy knoll on the left.

The CIA must have found out something while listening to her phonecalls – and had to eliminate her.
The only I find mysterious is that anyone finds this story in any way interesting.
It was unimportant when it happened 9 years ago. It’s even less so now.
I’ve given this matter some serious thought, and now realize who killed Diana and her boyfriend (and the driver):

Okay okay, a little respect for the departed if we may. Yes, the royal family gets more attention than it deserves in comparison to what it contributes, just like Paris Hilton, Liz Taylor, et al, but nonetheless, people who meant something to their families did die here.
Despite all this though, this story about the Secret Service surveilling her on the night in question is irrelevant. It basically fits the standard for a motion to dismiss for failure to state a claim to a T: even if all the alleged facts are true, the plaintiff (whoever that may be in this case) has no claim to injury and damages. Diana died because of what was stated in Crank’s post.

If someone had died at any time in world history, no one can make a joke that relates even tangentially to their life or their death? Can I speak irreverently about John Wilkes Booth, or is that disrespectful to Lincoln’s family?
At what point is it ok to indirectly joke about Di’s death? 2017? 2010, but only if we can be certain none of her family members are present? 2008 if no Brits are in the room, but 2011 if they are?
Nobody here is gloating over her death or celebrating it. And nobody is really even making diparaging remarks about her or her death, so lighten up, Thom. This is a baseball blog, not TIME’s letters page.
I had an British girlfriend at the time of the accident, so I had a glimpse into why it mattered to her, but I never understood the fascination with Diana for the rest of THIS country.
Her premature death falls much more neatly into the category of “Stupid” than “Tragic” for me. As the Crank’s brief summation demonstrates.
