Pay Me Now or Z You Later

Carlos Zambrano wants big money now, before the season starts, or he’ll become a free agent. Not hard to see where this is headed, or why – between the out-of-this-world payout to Barry Zito, a solid but manifestly inferior pitcher to Zambrano (but the only other guy who matches his combination of durability and consistent quality) and the Cubs’ offseason spending spree, you can’t blame Zambrano for wanting his piece of the honey pot.

  1. Different Z. Zito wasn’t worth it. This particular Zambrano shines in Wrigley. Put him on a scale, and pay him by the pound. Fastabll pitchers with big behinds and lags last forever. And he would look good in Met colors too.

  2. You use leverage when you have it. Guys who hav pitched as much as “Big Z” by the same age don’t tend to age well, so if I were in his shoes, I’d want to strike while the iron is hot and the checkbook is open, too.
