Studes continues his look at the best of all time by Win Shares Above Bench, this time with the starting pitchers. The results are a little different from my own past analyses, which I probably need to update – he rates Christy Mathewson, Warren Spahn and especially Red Ruffing higher than I would (all three benefitted very significantly from great run support).

I have to wonder about a system that rates Eck ahead of Koufax, who is not even on the chart.
Koufax is hurt in any of these ranking systems by the number of inning he worked in his career and especially the number where he was at the “special” level. If injury had not struck and Koufax had been able to maintain his production for the nubmer of year that the pitchers on the list did, he would have been top 10 easy and probably top 3.
