The Hated Yankees can’t be happy with their starting pitching thus far – five games into the season, they have yet to have a starter throw more than 5 innings or allow fewer than 4 runs, and against Tampa and Baltimore, no less. The most disturbing performance had to be Saturday’s outing by the new Japanese import, Kei Igawa, getting tagged for 7 runs by the Orioles.
On the other hand, Yankee fans and Yankee haters alike will have to stretch long and hard after Saturday’s come-from-behind, walk-off grand slam by A-Rod to claim that he never comes through in the clutch. I think I may have run these numbers before, but A-Rod has played 35 career postseason games, and entering the 9th inning of the 23d of those games (Game Four of the 2004 ALCS), his career postseason line was .375/.670/.421 with a 162-game pace for 120 Runs, 113 RBI and 21 SB. His “choke” tag is based almost entirely on the 44 bad at bats that followed.

Typical A-Rod. A single would have scored two runs and won the game, so he goes up and hits a meaningless grand slam. Let’s see him hit a grand slam when the pressure is on.

Well, now a week into the season, he’s only been involved in scoring the winning run in two come-from-behind wins for the Yankees. Apparently, he won’t be clutch until he wins every game in the bottom of the 9th (even when the Yankees are on the road) with a walk-off home run.

Until Clemens signs, Pavano is the ace. That’s going to take some getting used to in da Bronx. If Roger is not returning the Petite signing is/was foolish. And Igawa, instead of Lilly, figures to haunt Cashman. Problem for yank haters, if Damon is healthy, figure you need to score 6 minimum to beat these jokers.

One might conclude that the fans in Yankee Stadium suffer from a serious lack of judgment.
A-Rod came to the Yanks as the best SS in baseball history. The selfish Yankee captain insisted that A-Rod play 3d so that he could continue to play short despite his serious shortcomings on defense. This clearly hurt the team’s defense.
Ever since Jeter’s inexcusable selfishness, NY has failed to win the world series. Must be A-Rod’s fault.
