Early Yet

But in his matchup with Dice Matsuzaka, Felix Hernandez has thrown five innings against the Red Sox. And the Red Sox do not have a hit.
I should add that he has also not allowed a run, unlike Oliver Perez who left tonight’s game having allowed three runs on one hit – and 7 walks.
UPDATE: Seeing as how I have King Felix on all three of my fantasy teams, I’m not exactly excited by the possibility of him trying to throw a complete game on a cold night in April in Boston. Then again, he is pitching on 8 days’ rest due to the snowstorms in Cleveland. But say this much, Matsuzaka’s first two starts have produiced plenty of drama in the matchups.
UPDATE: Six innings. Cerrone must be envious. Somewhere, Bob Murphy is too.
UPDATE: Felix gets Youkilis, Ortiz and Manny up next in the seventh. This is the big test.
UPDATE: He gets Ortiz and Manny. Wow. Felix has thrown 85 pitches, so he should at least go 8.
UPDATE: JD Drew breaks it up to lead off the 8th.
UPDATE: Hernandez finishes with a 1-hit shutout, throwing 111 pitches and finishing by striking out Youkilis with Ortiz on deck.

  1. there should really be a national warning system whenever no hitters are in progress on cable. something like the sirens that go off in the midwest when theres a tornado. or really, espn should cut into whatever they are showing and show any game that has a no hitter going.
i got lucky, my dad called me, i was watchin fnl, but now i’ll get to see innings 8 and 9.

  2. Don’t like the 111 pitches. Don’t like it at all. Not in April, especially. Wasn’t he injured last year?
(Can we say “Mark Prior”? “Kerry Wood”? Managers: Learn your lesson!)

  3. I don’t think he was hurt, may have been tired at some point, which is normal for such a young pitcher.
I’d be more concerned about the 111 pitches if he wasn’t throwing on 8 days’ rest. He should be kept on a shorter leash in his next start as a precaution.

  4. I agree about the pitch count, but how do you take out a young rising star like that when he is throwing a no-hitter? Especially since baseball changed the rules to not recognize multi-pitcher no-hitters.

  5. Just wow – not that I don’t think Dice-K has that kind of ability as well, but that was a definite coming out party for a future star in this league. I hope Seattle gets wise and locks the kid up while they can still afford him. Bleh – today the Sawx better give Wakefield some support for a change.

  6. That was totally nasty. The Sox hit 3 balls to the outfield and only hit two balls hard. Drew’s hit, had it been 1 foot farther to 1B would have been an out. No one else even came close to a hit. That was domination.

  7. It is interesting. The day before Beckett turned in an excellent performance, including punching out Ichiro three times, and no one noticed because they were too busy anticipating Ichiro versus Daisuke.

  8. Maybe the Mets should consider pitching Perez only on the road. He has a major problem if he can’t get a good performance next time in Shea. The crowd will eat him alive.
