Subway Spring

Yeah, David Wright is all the way back.
Hated Yankees down 10 games to the Red Sox going into today; I won’t feel good until they are more than 14 1/2 down.
Would you rather be a Yankee starting pitcher or the drummer for Spinal Tap?
Mike Myers threw 54 pitches today – wonder when the last time that was? 10 is usually a long outing for him. ESPN’s game longs go back to 2002 and he hasn’t thrown 50 pitches in a game in that time period.
UPDATE: For a game with a 6-run lead that was waaaaaay too close at the end. What on earth were Cano and Wagner thinking – Cano rushing a throw to first in the bottom of the 8th with Julio Franco trotting up the first base line on his way to the shuffleboard court and tossing it up the right field line, Wagner throwing home with a 4-run lead and one out instead of getting the easy out at first (and catching Paul Lo Duca totally unawares).

  1. Wagner’s play was totally indefensible. If he fielded it cleanly, it would have been worth taking a shot at a double play, but after the bobble, it was a no-brainer to go to first. I can at least see how Cano felt a need to gamble with his team trailing, although it would still have been wiser to eat the ball, or take his time and still have a bit of a shot at Franco.

  2. Wagner was just celebrating the one year anniversary of his last 4 run lead meltdown in May against the hated Yankees.
Unfortunately for him, he’s been really excellent this spring. Couldn’t even blow the lead.
And Cano’s asinine throw hit his foot; that’s why it carombed down the line. Man, are the Yanks a poor fundamentals team: sloppy fielding, terrible situational hitting, lackadaisical baserunning. Ultimate sit-on-your-ass baseball.
I think Joe Torre’s time has come-and-gone. He’s got that Davey in ’89/’90 feel right about now. Bobby Valentine or Joe Girardi or 1996 Joe Torre has that team at .500 at least, maybe higher right about now. They just look lazy & sloppy.

  3. After watching that Wagner play, I almost bought a plane ticket to NY just to slap his face with a black leather glove. I think I’ve seen better judgment at my son’s Little League games. In fact, I know I have.

  4. Let’s make LoDuca take some of the blame on the Wagner play. True, it was a throw that shouldn’t have been made, but that doesn’t mean LoDuca’s not supposed to remain alert. Judgment aside, the throw was good in the sense that it was online and catchable.
