Add to the list of people I never want to see in a Mets uniform again Brian Lawrence, Aaron Sele, and, if he wasn’t already, Jorge Sosa (note that the list already included Guillermo Mota and Scott Schoenweis, as well as Chan Ho Park).
Joe Smith was no prize yesterday either.
UPDATE: Since August 26, Pedro, Glavine, Maine, Perez and Pelfrey are a combined 9-3 in 102.2 IP with a 2.81 ERA, averaging 8.50 hits, 0.61 HR, 3.86 BB and 7.10 K per 9 innings.
In the same period, Wagner, Heilman and Feliciano are 0-2 with 6 saves in 26.1 IP with a 3.42 ERA, averaging 8.20 hits, 1.03 HR, 2.73 BB and 8.89 K per 9 innings.
In the same period, the rest of the staff is 0-2 in 22.2 IP with a 10.32 ERA, averaging 14.69 hits, 2.38 HR, 5.16 BB and 3.97 K per 9.
I demand that you shoot me now.

  1. Explain me why the Mets couldn’t have brought up, say, Humber and put him in a Joba Chamberlain-like role for the rest of the season?

  3. Yet why do I get the feeling that if the Mets do make the playoffs, we are still more likely to see Mota, Sosa, or even Schoenweis than Pelfrey on the roster. We’re really at the point where the starters have to go no less than seven, maybe even eight. Screw the damned pitch count already, except for Pedro, who could be backed up by whichever starter is left out of the rotation.
    As for Humber – we’ve got two weeks left, it’s time to test him. We already know that Mota and Show are useless, so what’s the harm in seeing whether or not Humber could be useful out of the pen down the stretch, and even in the playoffs?

  5. Humber doesn’t seem to have the stuff to be a Joba Chamberlain type. But he almost certainly should have started yesterday. I think Lawrence had already pretty well established that he’s a batting practice pitcher.

  6. An awful string to be sure, can they miss the playoffs? The wild card looks like a layup, but you never know. Cards backed in last season, seems like it worked out well for them.
    Daryl, be happy you are a Jet fan. They might get the ship righted, played two very good teams. The Giants, on the other hand, are done, awful. Half the team has no business on an NFL roster. They are in year 1 of a 4 year rebuilding project, the coach is a lame duck, front office and ownership give no reason to inspire confidence. Could be worse, if they were owned by a Dolan, for example. But it’s pretty damn dark as is.

  11. I’ve been wondering why we haven’t seen more Humber since May. AS Pelfrey went 0-7, I couldn’t understand why Humber stayed in New Orleans.
    This season is taking on ’87-esque elements. Don’t shoot Crank, shoot me instead.

    BTW, no more Eric Gagne appearances would still be too many for my tastes. I’ll have a heart attack now.

  13. I should have clarified – I have no idea whether Humber is as good as Joba, and I don’t expect him to be. My point was that the Mets should have given Humber the same role as Joba got – shoring up a weak pullpen by going an inning or two here or there prior to your closer coming in. The Mets should have brought up Humber in mid-summer and put him in the bullpen, as the Yankees did with Joba – not on September 1 and pitch him for, like 3 innings so far.
    Humber may not be as good as Joba Chamberlain, but can he be worse than Mota/Schoenweis/etc? Doubtful. But it is academic now – it is just too late to do so now, I suppose. Their failure to prop up the bullpen – either through trades or by bringing up Humber, is looking like it will cost them the season.
    Also – as to abe’s question re the wild card: you realize that the Mets are tied with San Diego (who is a game back of Ariz) right now? If the Mets fall apart and lose the division to the Phillies, it is doubtful they’ll win the wild card.

  17. A.S., yes, that was my bad. I’d been reading Always Amazin, he had posted them 4.5 up in the WC. Painful as it would be, if the Mets lay it down in Sept so be it. You have to earn it, giving up 7 games in record time does not make the cut. Nice comeback tonight, big one with the Phils winning.
