Outrageous. That would be akin to paying a certain SS (or 3B nowadays) that kind of money for 10 years.

With these contracts, the whole deal, really, is whether the player performs in the first couple of years. Normally, inflation will make the back end not so painful, if you’ve gotten some big seasons (and hopefully a parade) in the first few seasons.
ESPN is reporting 7 years, $150 million. A lot of money, but doubt the Mets will ever regret making that deal.
A lot of money for a pitcher. If he stays healthy he MAY be worth it. It will be a big load to carry for a player who has not dealt with the pressure of playing in NY. What is the media going to be like if he has 2-3 bad starts in April? That is what will show if he is worth the money. If he can deal with the pressure, which will be more than he ever imagined (just ask ARod), he will be fine and the Mets are set.
Cheap when you think about it. Steinbrenner knew what he was doing. They both own a cable network, and the economics are totally different. Which is why John Wayne and Michael Jackson made so much. Besides, what the press never gets is that player contracts are subject to rapid depreciation, so those first five years is an enormous relief. Which is the real reason owners don’t want to go over that length of contract. Don’t forget what the insurance premium on him must be too. A large deduction in several ways. Plus the opportunity to sell their station to so many more subscribers, not to mention internationally, plus the jersey sales, also international.
From a pure baseball sense, it’s a good deal, from a business sense, it’s a great deal.
Who is this Santana character? Does he kick for the Giants? What a game! The pass rush was supreme, the defense dominated one of the greatest offenses we have ever seen. Wow.
