Tom Bridge looks at the Nationals’ new home, with pictures, descriptions and accounts (make sure to click the links for the Flickr tour):
I was worried that it wouldn’t look as good as Oriole Park in its red-brick, or any of the other new stadiums that have been built over the past couple years, as when I think cast concrete, I think of any of the various ugly ass buildings downtown that have all the personality of a washed-up tax accountant. Nationals Park has found a way, though, to make concrete sexy in a way that I didn’t think was possible.
I’m looking forward to checking it out – it’s gotta be better than RFK. Hopefully my first trip there will not be for baseball, but for the Pope.
Interestingly, you can’t see the park when driving by on I-295. I have an inkling that driving to the new stadium is going to be some sort of fresh hell.
That was an excellent writeup about the Nationals’ stadium. Now I know how he got an invitation to the flush and I didn’t. Damn, though, I’m still annoyed. How do I get an invitation to flush the toilets in Flushing next winter?
By the way, I like his commenter’s suggestion that Hebrew National buy the naming rights. Ted Lerner has donated a lot of dough to Jewish institutions, and the name would be perfect.
The Nats will be, as usual, pesky. The excitement of the new park might just help them steal a few more games this year. At the very least, any team w/ Wily Mo Pena and Dmitri Young in the lineup ought to be fun to watch.
