One of my longstanding dictums in politics is that when a politician uses the word “lobbyist” in a sentence, every word of what he or she is saying is utter horse manure. (Ditto for “special interests”). So it’s amusing to see Barack Obama, who loves to rail against lobbyist money, once again turning to….a big-time lobbyist to bail out his troubles financing the Democratic convention.
Hope nobody was fool enough to believe him.
This is, by the way, one of the side benefits of the cynicism of the GOP base about so much of what passes for ‘reform’ proposals inside the Beltway. Conservatives have spent years arguing that John McCain’s campaign finance reform crusades were misguided and counterproductive; we don’t have a whole lot of emotional energy wrapped up in the idea of McCain’s crystalline purity. But pity the Barackheads who have actually bought into his “new kind of politics” hustle.

Check out Beran’s article on NRO; basically, McCain fancies himself an opponent of “special interests” — to wit big business — in the mold of Teddy Roosevelt. He’s utterly indistinguishable from Obama on this front, and principled conservatives need to start rallying around Barr. A vote for McCain is a vote for destroying the Republican party of Reagan.
A vote for a guy like Barr is effectively a vote for Obama. No thanks.
McCain can do a fair amount of mischief, but he’s basically a moderate – conservative on some issues and in broad outline, liberal at times, but on economic/regulatory issues his record is basically moderate. That beats the heck out of Obama.
Crank you’re overstating the differences between Obama and McCain. McCain’s only true conservative credentials involve his policy positions on military intervention — which are frequently bullheaded and too “neo” if there is such a phrase. The rest of his policy record is this inchoate championing of diametrically opposite positions over the course of his career in the direction of political winds which are blowing leftward at the present time. Thus while he seeks to appease his base now, he will govern according to fashion not principle as he always has, and ruin the attempts by true conservatives to reclaim our party and agenda. This is why I refuse to vote on a “lesser evil” motivation, and support Barr also.

Look around the internet comments. There are folks out there who have falling for his shtick hook, line and sinker. Heck, there were people swooning as though they never heard a politician put the words hope and change in the same speech before.
