Anyone who watched the train wreck of Tim Redding’s outing today has to be depressed at the news that Oliver Perez has been sent back to Port St. Lucie with a bum knee, leaving Redding in the rotation for the foreseeable future. Jon Niese being 0-4 with an 8.04 ERA at Buffalo (Freddy Garcia’s is 8.18) leaves the Mets with fewer options still.

The Mets are faced with a critical decision point. Has the Reyes/Wright/Beltran team reached it’s end w/o ever getting to the WS? The poor pitching and injuries have kept the Mets back this year.
While they are 6 games over .500 and only 1/2 game behind the Phillies; do they have what it takes to win the divsion? Are they willing to make big trades to make a push this year? They need help pitching, 1B, and in the outfield.
We shall see if they can keep pace with their cross town rivals or will they make the 1st year in the new stadium a disappointing one.
OT Crank, but did you happen to read about the Texas BC game yesterday? 25 innings, 7 hrs and a relief pitcher hurling 12 1/3 ininngs hitless ball while throwing 160 pitches?
The Phillies have pitching problems of their own. Obviously I am biased towards them, but at the same time, there’s no reason the Mets can’t keep up with them.
Whichever team fixes their pitching problems will be the one that wins the NL East.
If the greatest concern in the rotation is the fifth starter, then I’m not too worried. Granted it’s possible that Pelfrey could hit a wall at some point, Maine could re-injure himself any second, and Livan can’t be expected to quite keep pitching like it’s 10 years ago, but the rotation is the least of my concerns with the team right now. If they do make a move, they just need a Blanton type pitcher who will not make a complete mess of the final spot in the rotation.
And not that I’d be content with standing pat offensively, but an OF of Beltran, Sheffield, and Church/Pagan is still vastly superior to Timo/Payton/Agbayani. In other words, it could be worse.
The Mets start a series tongiht with my Bucs. The Pirates aren’t hitting so the Met pitching should look awesome!
Meanwhile the Pirate starters (except for Snell) are doing OK.
It will also give the Mets a chance to look at Adam LaRoche to see if they want to trade for him!
Actually, if the Mets were serious about going for it this year, they would make the Pirates a really good offer for Nate McLouth. While I’d hate to lose the Nate “the Great”, if the Mets would make a offer with 3 good prospects, the Pirates might listen to it.
Peavy and/or Oswalt is the answer. One great pitcher followed by four back end starter types is not going to do it.
