Reyes Out

NY Post Mets beat writer is reporting that Jose Reyes has a hamstring tear and will likely be out until the All-Star Break (he’ll be evaluated in two more days). Aside from Wright, and maybe even more than Wright, this is the injury the Mets are least equipped to handle. It really has been an awful deluge of injuries.
More details here.

  1. I think the level of injuries is reaching the point where Minaya may have to decide that it’s not worth strip-mining the farm system in a failing effort to plug all the holes. Sometimes it’s just not your year. Plus, they might have a better chance of Fernando Martinez turning into a difference maker than of getting a difference maker for him.
In terms of short term solutions, I’d probably make inquiries about Miguel Tejada. There’s certainly no reason for the Astros to keep him, and he could probably play first base once Reyes is back. Not exactly a character guy, but desperate times demand desperate measures. Not sure if the Mets could take on much of his contract, though.

  2. I don’t know what safeguards Tejada has in his contract, but he has stated that he wants to remian an Astro. For whatever reason.

  3. Julio Lugo is still available. We’ll throw in Brad Penny, too. Please have Omar call Theo at his earliest convenience.
