In only two states – albeit enough to swing the election – did Nader outpoll Bush’s margin of victory: Florida and New Hampshire. If a third of New Hampshire’s 22,188 Nader voters had pulled the lever for Gore, he’d be president now.

Come on, now. Your Q/A is a bit misleading. It’s not as if you can just add Buchanan’s votes in those states to Bush’s total without adding Nader’s to Gore’s. If you do the latter, Gore easily outpaces Bush in those four states.
Actually, many Buchanan voters are probably more estranged from Bush now over immigration and trade, although I suspect he’ll collect some of them over the war.
Nader will have much less impact this time. Gore and Bush seemed pretty similar in 2000. Having seen that Bush is not, in fact, the uniter he claimed to be, but rather a proponent of an extreme conservative agenda, liberals won’t vote for a third-party candidate this time out.
