  1. “You keep being afraid of us because we keep trying to kill you.” Sigh.
Though I do love the 2nd point of their declaration.
“2. We reaffirm our dedication to the noble tenets of our faith that call for peace, tolerance, justice and human dignity……”
Which sounds like all of the nations who participated in the conference.

  2. The best way to combat Islamophobia is for Islamic governments to step forward a lead the fight against extremism. As for the link between Islam the religon and terrorists, maybe the fact that they always seem to be linked to a mosque has something to do with that.

  3. While I don’t agree with the premise, their perspective might be understood better in the context of western military occupations of Iraq&Afghanistan,Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians as well as it’s frequent invasions and occupations of Lebanon,Russia’s war in Chechnya,Chinese persecution of Muslims in Xinjiang province, organized anti-Muslim violence in the Indian state of Gujarat(to which authorities turned a blind eye),and of course, the US currently rattling sabers at Iran.
Come to think of it, they may have a point.

  4. Irish, as usual, plain common sense answers it all.
Anon, crap, crap and more crap. Stop blaming, let’s see:
    1. The Israelis and the Palestinians. Hell, they weren’t even called that until 1967. How come it was OK for them not to have a homeland under the Ottomans. Scapegoat crap.
    2. Lebanon. Biggest shame is that beautiful vibrant nation was so utterly destroyed in its civil war. By the way Anon, Israel had damn little to do with it. Yes, they invaded twice, and sorry they did. But they were in response to being fired upon a lot. Here in the US, we call that war. I think they do there as well.
    3. Chechnya. Well, I’ll never trust Russia, and you are right about Moscow being wrong. But please don’t bring it up. Because Al Qaida, and in fact all the Muslim world doesn’t.
    4. China persecutes everybody. They aren’t exactly nice to the Christians there either (I admit, I have no idea how they are to the few Jews there).
    5. So how come you don’t brink up the Balkans? You know, ethnic cleansing, Kosovo. Muslims were gathered up, raped and murdered by the THOUSANDS. Where was the Muslim outrage. Well, there actually was some outrage, and it finally stopped. Ooops,. forgot, it was Clinton and the US (and no insult to W, I think he would have done the same). Guess we don’t get thanked for putting our wonderful troops at risk for that one.
    6. Don’t want to forget the Sudan. It’s Arabs trying (and succeeding) to slaughter blacks, and enslaving the survivors. Reverend Al is too busy going after Imus to attack the real bad guys.
So, no Anon, they (the Muslim world) has no point.

  5. Mr. Rosenblatt, as I prefaced my remarks,it’s not an explanation of current history I share. That being said, you are painfully ignorant of the history of the Middle East and the Balkans.Your first point is so ill-informed that it’s undeserving of debate. To your second point,Israel has invaded Lebanon three times,1978,1982,and 2006 and your excuse that they were “fired upon” is so simplistic as to be laughable.Similarly simplistic is your understanding of the devolution of Yugoslavia and the multilateral ethnic atrocities that the Serbs undeservedly shouldered a lion’s share of the blame for.
I’m glad we agree that the behaviour of Russia and China is reprehensible, but then it’s always easy to score points with knee jerk apologists for Israel and the US with criticism of the former,so pardon me if I take your approbation about as seriously as I would a blind man admiring my painting.
I’m think I know what prompted the out-of-the-blue Al Sharpton remark by a guy with a sophisticated understanding of the way the world works such as yourself, but I could be wrong. An explanation would be helpful.

  6. Daryl, your the man. Anon, I think you are the one who needs to brush up on your history. The Arabs didn’t give a damn about the Palestinians until they figured out they could “use” them against Isreal. As for Isreal invading Lebanon, it is always OK to defend yourself. The Lebanese have attempted to defend themselves from Syria and Hamas. Isreal has helped, although they could have done more this last time. I think they have been listening to our Dims. If you are going to go to war and put the lives of your young heros on the line, let them win.

  7. I’m not sure why I’m responding to someone whose wit begins and ends with ‘Isreal’ and ‘Dims'(speaking of dim, some of the bulbs on your site are of relatively low wattage,Mr.Crank.Kind of hard on the eyes.),but the Israeli invasion of 2006 was not about Syria or Hamas-it stemmed from a border incident(of which there are conflicting accounts)which itself was part of a long running low level conflict between Israel and Hezbollah(who arose in response to Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon after the invasion of 1982-resistance being a somewhat frequent response of indigenous populations to occupation). No doubt the Lebanese would be surprised to learn those bombs that destroyed Beirut were actually in defense of the city-similar to the way we’ve liberated Baghdad.

  8. Being disputed hurts, doesn’t it Anon. If you look at what I wrote about the Balkans, I didn’t discuss it’s history. I could, but it dates to Philip of Macedon and of course, earlier. So I won’t. What I did write about was what was done in the 1990s in relation to the Balkans, not prior.
My view of Israel and Lebanon is simple; the same as any nation attacked. You hit me, I hit you back, and I do it as hard as possible so you don’t do it again. The primary purpose of a nation should be to safeguard its borders and citizens from all threats, from invasion to starvation.

  9. No,being disputed doesn’t hurt, but being disputed by folks with little knowledge of what they dispute is annoying, kind of like ants at a picnic. However, the annoyence is easier to tolerate by the satisfaction I get when I’m occasionally able to help the foolish(of which there seem to be a disproportionate number commenting here) extricate their heads from their asses.
Thanks for your,ah,abbreviated history of the Balkans.Unfortunately, your truncated comment seems to suggest a lack of appreciation for the ethnic and religious tensions that preceeded the 90’s(by the way,the 1990’s are considered “history”-modern history is still “history”,Professor)by a week or two.
Once again it’s necessary to point out to the semi-comatose here the distinction between the Hezbollah party and the Lebanese government. It’s also worth mentioning the concept of proportionality, particularly when exposing civilian populations to the inevitable ‘collateral damage’ of modern warfare.
It’s not necessary to clarify your view of Israel-I think I have you pretty well figured out as far as that goes.I could use a clarification of the Sharpton comment, however(but those black guys are sure good at baseball, aren’t they?)Speaking of baseball, you might consider confining your remarks to that topic. At least your comments are in the ballpark.

  10. Mouse, you ain’t all that bright yourself. The Black guys/baseball comment is telling. The number of blacks playing MLB has been falling for years. To the extent that some fools, probably on your level, are spouting conspiracy theories. You might consider confining your remarks to topics you know more about, like garbage collection.

  11. Uh,right abe. That’s what I meant. It’s nice they let you guys have computer access at the group home.
