The WSJ’s sports blog rounds up some good stories about 1955 World Series hero and legendary pitching coach Johnny Podres. With Podres’ death, only a handful of the Dodgers of the early to mid 50s remain, most notably the team’s young slugger Duke Snider.

Time flies. I can recall Old Timers Days when some of the 1927 Yankees were still around. There are still a fair amount of living Brooklyn Dodgers, but I think Snider and Newcombe are the only ones left who are really associated with that era in people’s memories. Well, also Ralph Branca.
I believe Carl Erskine and Preacher Roe are still alive, too. But I believe other than them it’s minor players who came up at the tail end, the best known of whom are Zimmer, Lasorda and Roger Craig.
And Koufax, of course.
